St-Mary Surgical Hope Fund
The St. Mary Surgical Hope Fund was formed as a result of the great need for charity surgical care in Kenya. The Coptic Mission realized that many of the surgical cases referred to the Coptic Hospital had been turned away from other local hospitals due to financial constraint. The Surgical Hope Fund enabled these patients who might have otherwise had to delay or even forgo life-changing and life-saving operations, to receive the surgical care they needed at greatly subsidized costs. If the outstanding amount was still unattainable, the Surgical Hope Fund would cover the entire sum.
The stories of lives restored are plentiful. Juliana, a smily eleven-year-old girl from western Kenya had tragically been involved in a fire accident when she was seven years old that left her with a severe burn on the back of her leg. The burn caused a piece of flesh to attach her upper calve to the lower part of her hamstring, causing her inability to extend and use the leg. Although a simple surgical procedure could have had her walking again immediately, she spent the rest of her childhood on one leg using a wooden cane because her family did not have the means to pay for the surgery. Although Juliana could not have a regular childhood, she remained very courageous and cheerful, and loved to go sing with her friends at Church at every opportunity she could find. Her vibrant spirit, perseverance, and devotion to God even won the hearts of her parents (who had not yet had a serious relationship with the Lord) to attend church.
By the grace of God, arrangements were made through the Surgical Hope Fund to transport her to Nairobi, where an operation in a series of procedures was arranged. Juliana beamed with excitement when she was told that she would one day again be able to walk and even run with the other children. Juliana recovered from the first surgery and traveled back to western Kenya to her family. The Surgical Hope Fund gave Juliana a second chance and a hope for a happy adolescence.
In addition to the free surgeries, the Surgical Hope Fund sponsors surgical camps in remote branches of Kenya in order to intercept patients unable to reach the hospital. The Surgical Hope Fund covers costs that range from transportation fees to chemotherapy after surgical procedures for cancer patients. The Coptic Hospital also invites regularly senior surgeons from the United States and other countries to perform highly specialized surgeries free of charge.
