Vocational Training

Thanks to God’s providence, the Mission has received a generous donation from our friends in Holland, which has enabled us to start a Vocational Training Project in Western Kenya.

The aim of the project is to help the poor of the community to be self-sufficient and break the poverty cycle, by teaching them a trade they can work with. It is targeted to help mainly the unemployed who are able and willing to work, but are often hindered by the high costs of Technical Colleges in Kenya. The goal of the project can be summarized by the famous proverb which says: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” (Lao Tzu)

The facilities of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Maseno will be used for these Vocational Training Courses. Equipment has been purchased to train people in 7 different trades, namely Nursing Aid, Computers, Electronics, Tailoring, Plumbing, Carpentry, and Welding.

Many people have signed up and have started their courses, and many others have written their names down on the waiting list. The courses most in demand right now are Computers, Tailoring, Electronics, and Carpentry. Many youth also are coming to learn computers to gain skills which will help them land a better job upon graduation from school. Thanks to God, the community is already very happy with this new Project, although there is still work to be done in order to get recognition as a reputable Training Center in the area. Please remember this project in your prayers.
